Setting Up Your StayFi UniFi Device for BetterSTR

This guide walks you through the process of setting up your UniFi Access Point for use with BetterSTR. You’ll learn how to reset your device, install the BetterSTR UniFi Setup Tool, configure the device, and adopt it in your BetterSTR dashboard.

🧩 Requirements

Before you begin, make sure you have:

• A UniFi device (Access Point)

• A computer connected to the same network as your UniFi device

• The BetterSTR UniFi Setup Tool (download links below)

• A paperclip or similar tool for pressing the reset button

🔄 Step 1: Factory Reset Your UniFi Device

Before configuring your device for BetterSTR, you must reset it to factory defaults:

1. Power on the device — Ensure your UniFi device is plugged in and powered on.

2. Locate the reset button — Usually a small recessed button on the back or bottom of the device.

3. Press and hold — Using a paperclip, press and hold the reset button for 10 seconds.

4. Wait for reboot — The device will reboot and return to factory default settings (this takes 1–2 minutes).

💡 Tip: The LED will flash during the reset process. Wait until it stops flashing and remains steady before continuing.

💾 Step 2: Download the BetterSTR UniFi Setup Tool

For macOS

• Download: BetterSTR-UniFi-Setup-v1.0.5-mac.zip

• Extract the ZIP file

• Hold ⌘ Command and right-click the app, then choose “Open” (required the first time on macOS)

For Windows

• Download: BetterSTR-UniFi-Setup-v1.0.5-win.zip

• Extract the ZIP file

• Run setup_and_build.bat to build the application

• Once complete, run the generated .exe file from the dist folder

⚙️ Step 3: Run the Setup Tool

1. Open the BetterSTR UniFi Setup application

2. Select your network — The tool will automatically detect your network interfaces; choose the one your UniFi device is connected to

3. Click “🔍 Scan Network” — The tool will scan your local network for UniFi devices (this takes 1–2 minutes)

🌐 Step 4: Configure Your Device

Once the scan is complete:

1. Locate your device — You’ll see a list of factory-reset UniFi devices including:

   • IP Address

   • Device Model (e.g., UAP-AC-Pro, UAP-Mesh)

   • Status: Ready to configure

2. Double-click the device — This will configure it to connect to the BetterSTR cloud controller

3. Wait for confirmation — You’ll see the message:

   “✅ Device has been configured! The device will now connect to your BetterSTR cloud controller.”

4. Check the log — Verify that you see:

   “✓ Successfully configured device at [IP address]”

🖥️ Step 5: Adopt Device in BetterSTR Dashboard

After configuration:

1. Log in to your BetterSTR account

2. Go to WiFi Management → UniFi Controller

3. Click “Adopt Device” and enter the MAC address (found on the device label)

4. Wait 1–2 minutes for adoption to complete

5. Assign the device to your property by clicking the edit icon

6. Configure your WiFi networks and captive portal settings

Your UniFi device is now connected to the BetterSTR cloud controller and ready for use.
