Adding and Organizing Menu Items

Learn how to add new sections, create sub-menus, and organize your guidebook content with drag-and-drop.

Understanding the Menu Structure

Your guidebook uses a three-level menu system to organize content:

  1. Top-Level Menus – Main sections (e.g., "Check-in", "House Rules", "Local Area")
  2. Sub-Menus – Categories within sections (e.g., under "Local Area": "Restaurants", "Attractions")
  3. Content Items – Individual pages with your actual content

Adding a New Top-Level Menu

  1. In the Guide Builder, click the Add Menu button at the top of the left panel
  2. A modal will appear with options:
    • Title – Enter the menu name (e.g., "Local Recommendations")
    • Icon – Choose an icon from the library
  3. Click Save
  4. Your new menu appears at the bottom of the list

Adding Sub-Menus

Sub-menus help organize content within a main section:

  1. Hover over the parent menu item
  2. Click the + (plus) icon that appears
  3. Select Add Sub-Menu
  4. Enter the title and choose an icon
  5. Click Save

Example: Under "Local Area", add sub-menus for "Restaurants", "Beaches", "Shopping"

Adding Content Items

Content items are the actual pages guests will read:

  1. Hover over any menu or sub-menu
  2. Click the + (plus) icon
  3. Select Add Item
  4. Fill in the details:
    • Title – Item name shown in the menu
    • Icon – Optional icon
    • Content – Your text, images, and formatting
  5. Click Save

Choosing Icons

Icons help guests quickly identify sections. BetterSTR uses FontAwesome icons with thousands of options:

  1. Click the Icon field when adding/editing an item
  2. Browse categories or search by keyword
  3. Click an icon to select it
  4. Choose an icon style:
    • Regular (outlined)
    • Solid (filled)
    • Light (thin lines)
    • Duotone (two-color)

Tip: Use consistent icon styles throughout your guide for a professional look.

Reordering Items with Drag and Drop

Easily rearrange your menu structure:

  1. Click and hold any menu item in the left panel
  2. Drag it to the desired position
  3. Release to drop it in place
  4. The new order saves automatically

What You Can Do:

  • Move top-level menus up or down
  • Reorder items within a menu
  • Move items between menus (drag to a different parent)
  • Promote sub-items to top level (drag to root)

Editing Existing Items

  1. Click on any item in the left panel
  2. The content loads in the right panel editor
  3. Make your changes
  4. Changes save automatically

To edit the title or icon:

  1. Hover over the item
  2. Click the pencil (edit) icon
  3. Update the title or icon
  4. Click Save

Deleting Items

  1. Hover over the item you want to delete
  2. Click the trash icon
  3. Confirm the deletion

Warning: Deleting a menu with sub-items will delete all nested content. This cannot be undone.

Visibility Settings

Control who can see each item:

  • Level 1 – Visible to everyone (guests and owners)
  • Level 2 – Visible to owners only (for internal notes)
  • Level 3-4 – Advanced visibility controls

Use owner-only visibility for:

  • Internal notes about the property
  • Maintenance reminders
  • Content you're still drafting

Best Practices

  • Keep menus short – 5-8 top-level items is ideal
  • Use clear names – "WiFi" is better than "Internet Access Information"
  • Group related content – Put all appliance instructions under one "Appliances" menu
  • Put important items first – Check-in info and WiFi at the top
  • Test on mobile – Make sure navigation works well on phones
